The Power of Candid Honesty in Organisational Culture

Share the Post:

In any successful organisational culture, honesty is often encouraged. But honesty and candid honesty are not the same.

Let’s be honest, candid honesty begins within and it manifests itself in how leaders reflect, how teams interact, and how decisions are made when no one is watching.

Take feedback. It is frequently softened or vague, presented as supportive but lacking clarity or follow-through. This creates the impression of alignment, while the underlying issues remain unresolved.

At Coode, we focus on honesty that is clear, intentional and constructive. It is not about being blunt. It is about being direct enough to create progress. And it applies beyond feedback.

Candid honesty shapes how organisations grow. It builds trust, reduces friction, and helps teams focus on what matters. In organisational culture, that means aligning what is said with what is done and turning intent into impact.

The Stockdale Paradox

The mindset behind candid honesty is well described by the Stockdale Paradox.

Introduced by Jim Collins in Good to Great, the concept is based on the experience of Admiral James Stockdale, who survived over seven years in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp. He did so by holding two truths at once:

“You must retain unwavering faith that you will prevail in the end… and at the same time confront the most brutal facts of your current reality.”

This paradox offers a powerful lens not just for giving feedback, but for leading through complexity and driving change.

It’s not about false positivity or relentless critique. It’s about clarity without denial, and belief without delusion. It invites leaders to look directly at what’s not working while maintaining the belief that things can and will improve.

At Coode, we see this mindset as essential to meaningful organisational culture transformation. Because real change requires not only the courage to speak the truth, but the courage to hear it, face it, and act on it.

Personal Experience at Coode

Since joining Coode as the Marketing Manager, I have seen this mindset in action.

Feedback here is specific and thoughtful, always with the intention to support growth and progress.

A recent example involved a presentation I delivered to the team. Charlie Coode, our founder and Principal, shared that while I presented without fear, I needed to be more concise and structured in my delivery.

The feedback wasn’t personal. It was purposeful. He offered to coach me through it, helping me refine how I communicate.

That’s what leadership looks like: seeing potential, sharing truth, and investing in progress.

It reminded me that feedback isn’t just a performance check. It’s a form of belief. And belief backed by action is what drives real progress.

But it also reminded me of something else. Applying the Stockdale Paradox does not stop with others. It starts with you. The most powerful change happens when individuals, especially leaders, are willing to examine their own patterns honestly, acknowledging both strengths and gaps, and still hold the belief that something better is possible.

Coode and Leadership

At Coode, we work with leadership teams to turn organisational culture into a strategic asset.

We support organisations to reduce friction, align behaviour with strategy, and drive meaningful performance through culture.

And, as one of our clients put it:

“In 3 years Concurrent has transformed every aspect of performance, customer experience, product offerings, culture, and shareholder sentiment. The Coode team have been a critical partner to me in establishing a new leadership team capable of individually and collectively evolving to the degree necessary to make this happen.

The rigour of the approach and toolset, combined with the very personalised insights, nudges and critical feedback, have made this long-term engagement extremely successful.

If you believe that aligning leadership mindset and behaviours to strategic intent is the key to creating paradigm-shifting outcomes, then talk to Coode. But be prepared to be held accountable for walking the talk.”

At Coode, we bring external perspective with embedded understanding. We work closely within the organisation and its strategy, but we also maintain the distance needed to challenge assumptions and name what might otherwise go unspoken.

That balance of insight and objectivity helps build the kind of honesty that moves culture forward.

If you want your organisation’s performance to shift, honesty must come first. Because without honest reflection, leadership defaults to habit, and culture drifts from strategy.
